Intro: Coleman Octagon
- Pole Type: Steel
- Water-resistant polyester...
- Full length zip-on fly...
Although I am a total sucker for Coleman products, this has not kept me from being critical of them in the past. I went into my experience with the Octagon 98 as unbiased as I could be, looking to be extremely critical of the tent. But, I soon found out this tent is pretty difficult to be overly critical about. In almost every category it passes with flying colors.
This tent boasts some seriously impressive features. The rainfly is built from water-resistant polyester, and the seams are taped. This may seem like a trivial detail, but it ensures that this tent is extremely protective from the rain. It came down in buckets when I was out and about in this beauty of a tent, and I was extremely impressed with how dry the tent remained, and how well the rainfly worked. The tent is also dynamic in how it deals with temperature. The zip-on fly that is included is full length, and it allows for fantastic ventilation. Setting up the tent is a breeze, and the color-coded poles certainly don’t hurt with that aspect of using this tent as your camping companion.
Good News for Giants
For the taller campers among us, this tent has the extra bonus of giving some extra room to stand. This inventive tent design provides a basic feature that I am surprised more tent manufacturers have not used in the past. Not only is this an obvious benefit for tall campers, but, in general, it makes the tent seem substantially more spacious and less claustrophobic. This luxurious height has all sorts of benefits, both practical and otherwise. But the great design does not stop here– the tent also caters to the smallest among us: children. The D door is perfect for kids, as it doesn’t require zipping and unzipping for them. It is easy and convenient, and allows them to enter and exit as freely as they please, without you having to constantly assist. Even for an 8 person tent this is a large tent in comparison to similar products on the market. It provides a totally refreshing amount of ventilation due to the amount of mesh implemented in the design.
At the end of the day, this is a very good tent, and I find it the price to be kind of jaw-droppingly amazing. The fact that all these great features can come at such a low price means that this tent easily provides a rare amount of value. I have no hesitation in recommending this product to any camper looking for a well ventilated and spacious 8 person tent.
